The big television event of 1953 — and pretty much all of 1950s TV — was the birth of “Little Ricky” Ricardo on the Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz Classic TV comedy I Love Lucy. The show's immense popularity introduced viewers to a character that would become a significant part of television history. Actor Keith Thibodeaux, known as Richard Keith, was directly influenced by this event three years later when he was cast in the role during the show's final season and in the subsequent series, The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.
In an interview with the New York Post, Keith shared that during this time, he lived a “divided” life, which felt almost schizophrenic. The production of the show didn’t occur throughout the entire year, allowing him the opportunity to attend a regular school, St. Victor’s in West Hollywood. Despite having a unique experience, he sometimes struggled with balancing his school life and his role on the set.
“I had two lives,” Keith recalled. “My normal life with my friends at school and this other life when I was on the set. I was introduced to Lucy and Desi’s children, Lucie and Desi Jr., and I would spend weekends with them in Beverly Hills or at their ranch.” He described how he often felt reluctant to leave his friends for these outings, yet found joy in his time with the famous family once he arrived.
